deviantArt -- http://www.deviantart.com/ -- is by it's own admission, "the largest art community in the world! As a member, you can collect favourites, submit art, and track your friends and favourite artists."

I believe it was originally designed to be a forum and hosting service for "non-mainstream" art, often digitally designed, but now encompasses a variety of media from digital, to paint, to photography, to combinations thereof.
