Stitch,
My dad (92 yrs old) often tells the story of when during WWII, he flew to Australia for some R&R.
He (wrongly) assumed July was the summer months (like New York) and only packed his army summer wear. He said he froze his arse off! I know he had a great time

During WW II there were lots of American soldiers in Australia.
By 1944 the New Guinea campaign was finally becoming an American operation. 500,000 American servicemen were in Australia, and both governments contemplated banning American-Australian marriages. Eventually 12,000 Australian women married Americans.

And the total population of Australia at that time was 7 million, so 1/2 a million American troops made an indelible impact on Australia.
Say g'day to your Dad from down under!

Next thing you know you'll be confusing your friends when you tell them on a hot South Carolina day: "Boy, it's hot as hell out there...must be 35 degrees!"

MSHL... I'm learning a whole new language from my Brit and Australian brothers and sisters. I'm spelling words with "Z's" with "S's' " I started pronouncing the "H" in Herbs. After yelling at the driver who cut me off yeterday, my wife asked me what a "wanker" was? I told her it was a bad driver. She's been muttering the word ever since. I better tell her some day.

Question IGS,
How does one define "just and Virtuous?" Good and virtuous for whom? Need a more concrete question like "Will Ben's ultimate goal end in the death of the Losties? or something like that
-------------------
Hey Starbucks, sorry I missed your post -- this is a very delayed response. To be honest, after typing out my debate topic, I realized that I should have ditched one of the two terms "just" and "virtuous".
But on the flip side, I like keeping one of these terms (i.e. "just") because I think it adds depth to the discussion. As I pointed out in my post, not only would one be required to establish (for example) that Ben's goal is the death of the Losties but then a poster would also have to justify/attack that goal in the context of the Lost world.
The question of "just for whom" would be a question our posters would have to address. Just for the world at large, the Losties, the Others, the Hostiles, etc. I think that is interesting and would lead, perhaps, to real insights re: the show.
For me, the far more interesting debate is not simply: is Ben plotting to kill the Losties? But rather, may Ben's plot (if it involves the death of the Losties) actually be laudable (i.e. Ben saves the world by sacrificing the Losties).
I get my proposed resolve (or any debate topic I would likely propose) will tend to lack the concreteness of a debate topic such as the one you recommend, and that, for many, makes it far less appealing.
But besides the characters themselves, Lost is a show driven by themes (good vs. evil, fate vs. free fill, empiricism vs. spiritualism/mysticism). So I would like to see the debates touch upon these themes -- require debaters to deal with, at some level, the underlying questions being asked by the show.

Ummm, hey this is Dave, Hopes husband. Hope is really sorry that she hasn't been around but she broke her back in a horrible car accident. She feels bad that she hasn't been on here in a long time.
She is on the mend and will be back to kick butt soon but understands if you guys want to move on.

That is very sad news to hear. Please pass on my own thoughts and well wishes to Hope. I am sure that I speak on behalf of everyone here when I say that she will be in our thoughts and prayers. Tell her that we all hope that she has a fast and full recovery from the accident.
Thanks for letting us know.

Thank you Dave, for telling us.
I'm sure everyone here will be hoping for a speedy recovery. That really came as a shock to me as I read it.
I don't mind as long as it takes to wait for an official debate. We could have an unofficial debate in the mean time.
Best Wishes, Ben
